From our full-time Fire Chief to administrative personnel and technical support, these dedicated individuals manage the essential functions that keep our district running smoothly. They bring expertise, experience, and a passion for service to ensure we are always ready to respond to emergencies.
Chief Joe Kaczenski
Fire Chief
With over 30 years in firefighting, including 20 years at Hillsboro Fire Department, Chief Joe Kaczenski has been with Mist-Birkenfeld Fire District for 13 years and has served as Chief for the past seven. Known for his dedication to training and community safety, he has enhanced the department's capabilities and fostered a collaborative team environment. Outside of work, Joe is a superfan of all things track and field, enjoys sailing, cheering for the Raiders and Ducks, and cherishes his time with family.
Will Steinweg
Training Division Chief
Will has proudly served the Mist-Birkenfeld Fire District since 2007, returning as Division Chief in 2021 after gaining extensive experience across various Oregon fire districts. He oversees training programs, ensuring all personnel are equipped with the latest skills. Beyond the department, Will is the President of the Lower Columbia Regional Training Officers Association and serves on several committees, enhancing regional emergency response. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family, hunting, fishing, and coaching basketball and track for Jewell.
Marianne Berg
Director of Administration
Since 2013, Marianne has been a vital part of the Mist-Birkenfeld Fire District as the Director of Administration, affectionately known as "The Commish." Her expertise in administrative operations and unwavering dedication keep the department running smoothly. Outside of work, Marianne enjoys horseback riding, cheering for the Kansas City Chiefs, watching documentaries, and gardening—especially tomatoes and flowers.
Jesika Kaczenski
Director of Emergency Medical Services
EMT
Jesika Kaczenski joined the Mist-Birkenfeld Fire District as a volunteer in 2009 and joined as a staff member in 2025. Her diverse skills enhance community health and emergency response.
Jesika enjoys spending time with her family and friends. Her commitment to her work and community makes her a valuable asset to Mist-Birkenfeld and beyond.
Our Seasonals
With the support of a grant obtained through the Oregon State Fire Marshal's office, our seasonal fire teams are equipped with the necessary resources and training to effectively combat wildfires during the peak fire season. This funding enables us to bolster our firefighting capabilities, ensuring that we can respond swiftly and efficiently to fire emergencies. As they serve our community, these firefighters also have the opportunity to grow in their skills, gaining valuable experience and expertise.
